Preparing Your Home for Storm Season

Storm season is here and it’s tipped to be a severe one, so making your house storm-resistant should now be a high priority. Thunderstorms, hail, rain and damaging winds are all on the cards, so spend next weekend getting your home fully prepared. Things to do as soon as possible include:

  • Cleaning out drains, gutters and downpipes. If water backs up, it can enter your home in a number of ways.
  • Prune overhanging tree branches that could be dislodged during a storm, particularly near your home and vehicles.
  • Clean up the yard and store everything undercover that has the potential to become a missile, including garden tools, childrens’ toys, outdoor furniture and pot plants.
  • Make sure you have an emergency storm kit prepared. This should include a flashlight and spare batteries, a portable radio, a first aid kit, all essential medicines, candles, matches, water and tinned food for a couple of days.
  • Download the early warning network app to your iPhone or Android phone and keep your phone charged.
